Armyworms in rice - new findings, March 2018

2018 Rice Industry Field Day Poster

New findings:

  • There is more than one species in our rice. 2/3 of crops sampled contain sugarcane armyworm as well as common armyworm. The caterpillars look the same, but the adults are different.
  • Typically 65 to 75% of mature armyworm caterpillars are parasitised by either wasps or flies that kill either the host caterpillar or the pupal stage.
  • Artificial defoliation trials show 25% defoliation by length = no yield loss. 50% = 13.3% yield loss
