2018 Rice Industry Field Day

Research for today, rice for the future

Event Resources

2018 Rice Industry Field Day Booklet

  • Agronomic trials, including aerobic rice trials and water use on different sowing methods compared to the traditional water seeded method, Brian Dunn, NSW DPI
  • Factors that affect whole grain yield in rice, Rachael Wood, NSW DPI & CSU Functional Grains Centre
  • All things in pests including trial work on snails and armyworms, Mark Stevens, NSW DPI
  • The rice breeding program including an inspection of new varieties and the processes undertaken to breed  a new variety, Peter Snell, NSW DPI

Videos

Mark Stevens, NSW DPI - Snail control research update

Results from c2018 snail control trials show that niclosamide is an effective chemical. Current work is improving the formulation for better dispersal.

Mark Stevens, NSW DPI - Armyworm damage thresholds

New research shows that rice can tolerate large amount of damage without yield loss before panicles emerge. 25% defoliation of the plant prior to panicle emergence resulted in no yield loss. 50% defolication resulted in 13% yield loss.

Mark Stevens, NSW DPI - Russian wheat aphid on rice

Russian wheat aphid was first found on rice in 2017 but the likely impact is not yet known. Future research will investigate whether the aphids damage rice.

Organic Field Day - Bill Barnhill's Farm

Screen Shot 2018-03-21 at 1.54.31 pm.png

At Bill Barnhill’s farm at Wamoon on 7 March Bill gave us an insight into being an organic farmer and detailed his management practices to grow high yielding organic rice crops. The day also included an inspection of variety and nutrition trials with Peter Snell, NSW DPI followed by a SunRice talk about the growing demand for organic/biodynamic rice and a talk from Neil Bull, RGA on new legume varieties to plant into rice stubble.

Key points:

  1. Bill controlled rice weeds through a long rotation out of rice into pasture and timely irrigation management to drown weeds.
  2. The new variety ViandA (YRM70) is a potential option for organic growers in water-short years, particularly as it has good seedling vigour to outgrow weeds.
  3. The demand for organic rice within SunRice markets is growing and SunRice are developing an ‘in conversion’ program.
