Crop rotation affects rice yields (March 1992)

Beecher, G Thompson J

This IREC Farmers Newsletter article presents the results of a trial undertaken at Yanco Agriculture institute investigating crop rotation effects rice yields. The experiment was based on seven rice based cropping system.  As a result of all seven cropping sequences returning to rice during the 1990/91 it was possible to compare the effect of the cropping sequences on rice yield and cropping requirements. The results discussed the soil nitrogen availability, crop sequence effect at PI, pasture types, pasture lengths effects and rice grain yield. The article concluded that potential yield advantages of pasture based systems compared to that of continuously cropped rice systems. It was stated that pasture type had no significant effect on rice grain yield response.
