This IREC Farmers Newsletter article presents information and an update of results for the RIRDC and NSW Acid soil Action funded DAN 161A project investigating the identification and management of soil acidification in irrigated farming systems in Southern NSW. The project has collated all available so pH data in order to assess changes in the soil pH that are occurring over time in irrigated situations of the Riverina. The project aims to relate soil pH to soil and crop types and is attempting to do this by the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) overlays. The author states that soil pH levels show a long term decline and subsoil acidity can lead to significant production losses.
