Monitoring shoots and nitrogen in rice crops (November 1990)

Batten, G Geltch, J Menzies, G Nott, R Moore, S

This IREC Farmers Newsletter presents information on monitoring shoots and nitrogen in rice crops. A study undertaken in 1989/90 seasons is presented in this article. The article covers areas such as shoot density, rate of change of shoot density and nitrogen around PI, value of sampling crops before and at PI stages and shoot nitrogen. The article concludes with the recommendations that farmers must be more confident of crop nutrient status requirements. It is important not to rely on one estimate and should be observed regularly at 65-70 days following sowing and then again at PI.
