Rice stubble to burn or to incorportate (May 1993)

Beecher, G, Dunn, J.A, Dunn, W.A

This IREC Farmers Newsletter article presents the results of a rice based rotation trial undertaken at Yanco Agricultural station on stubble incorporation and stubble burn treatments were applied to the rice stubble of five crops between 1987-1991. The article presents a brief overview on amount of stubble incorporated, nitrogen application rates, stubble management response, soil organic carbon levels. The article concludes with two key findings firstly that rice sown into the previous seasons rice ground grows in a nitrogen deficient environment and large increase in yield can be achieve d by applying fertiliser nitrogen. Rice crop yields were the same regardless of rice stubble management techniques ( burn or incorporate) where adequate nitrogen fertiliser was applied.
