Increasing cold tolerance in rice by osmoprotectant and gibberllic acid (January 2002)

This IREC Farmers Newsletter report presents the result for a two year RIRDC project on increasing cold tolerance in rice by osmoprotectant and gibberllic acid. Soaking seed with appropriate concentration of gibberellic acid (GA3) increased the shoot weight of rice by about 34% compared to water treated control under low temperature stress. Foliar application of an osmoprotectant glycinebetaine, doubled the number of engorged (viable) pollen grains under low temperature stress. Under field conditions this treatment also increase rice yield by 11%.
