This IREC Farmers Newsletter article presents information, polices and guidelines for growing organic rice. Organic rice was initially a opportunity crop however with new regulations organic rice is now a long term and specialty production. With strict guidelines and regulation under NASAA the grower has to adhere to. The report presents information on land selection, sowing methods, crop establishment, weed control, insect control, slime, water management, stubble management and rotation. The report concluded that organic rice growing was relatively in its infancy in 1991. The author states they believe problems will arise and considerable thought and experimentation will be required to overcome these issues. They also state that the guidelines presented will require modification as situations change and better management practices are developed.
