This IREC Farmer Newsletters report presents and update on a RIRDC project investigating the improving rice using improved methods. The report states that the Rice Improvement team, cereal chemistry and rice breeding team have launched into the 21st century by embracing new technology to evaluate two f the most important and elusive quality characteristics: amylose content and fragrance. The project is investigates the microsatelitte which is a small piece of DNA that is very close to the gene of interest. Microsatelitte are set to become the future for rice quality evaluation. The use of the amylose microsatellite could mean an earlier release of an Australian basmati rice variety.
