This IREC Farmers Newsletter article presents information on how to recognize Panicle initiation(PI). The article indicates the most efficient use of nitrogen is if top dressed prior to permanent flooding onto dry soil as this minimizes loss. The article presents information on how to detect for PI and the steps involved in determining if PI has occurred. The article concludes that not all varities are the same and Inga and varieties with early vegetation on growth benefit from mid seasn application.
