Sodseeding rice in the Murray Valley (1979)
This IREC Farmers Newsletter article present information on a demonstration undertaken in the Murray Valley during the 1978/79 rice season. The article states that historically due to poor layouts, delayed maturity and heavy crusting soils the Murray Valley was seen to be not suitable for sod seeding. However with the introduction of triple disk seeder and improved layouts the Murray Valley has the potential to test sod seeding. The results from the demonstration was that emergence was equivalent to the combine sown crop, maturity of sod sown crop was not delayed compared to combine sown crop, yield were similar and no issues with slime or bloodworm.
